Burbank Fire Pit Rules Rules (2026): What You Need to Know

Burbank adopts the California Fire Code with local amendments administered by the Burbank Fire Department. Gas and propane fire pits are generally permitted for residential use and are exempt from South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) no-burn orders. Wood-burning fire pits and outdoor fireplaces are permitted on allowable burn days but must be extinguished during mandatory SCAQMD no-burn advisories.

Recreational fires must have a fuel area no greater than 3 feet in diameter and 2 feet in height. A minimum clearance of 10 feet from structures, fences, and combustible materials is required. Fire extinguishing equipment (garden hose or fire extinguisher) must be readily available during use. Burbank has designated portions of its hillside areas, particularly near the Verdugo Mountains, as Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones (VHFHSZ). Properties in these zones face enhanced restrictions including increased vegetation clearance requirements, potential seasonal burn prohibitions beyond standard SCAQMD rules, and stricter requirements for outdoor fire feature installations.
