Garden Grove requires property owners to remove weeds, debris, and vegetation that constitutes a nuisance, fire hazard, or detriment to neighboring properties. The fire code also requires removal of vegetation capable of being ignited.
Under GGMC Section 9.18.120, landscape maintenance includes the removal of dead, decayed, diseased, or hazardous trees, weeds, and debris constituting unsightly appearance, danger to public safety, or detriment to neighboring properties or property values. Overgrown vegetation likely to harbor rats, vermin, or nuisances must be pruned or removed. The fire code additionally requires that weeds, grass, vines, and other growth capable of being ignited and endangering property be cut down and removed by the property owner or occupant. Code Enforcement proactively patrols for weed violations and responds to neighbor complaints. Property owners receive notice to correct violations before fines are assessed.
Weed violations are enforced through Code Enforcement notices. Non-compliance may result in city abatement at the owner's expense plus administrative fines. Fire hazard vegetation violations may be enforced by OCFA with additional penalties.
