The City of Turlock allows limited livestock only on larger parcels: on land one-half acre or larger, a resident may keep one horse, or one cow, or one sheep, or one goat (Municipal Code Section 6-1-105.1). Stables or barns can't be within 100 feet of a neighbor's home. Hogs and pig sties are banned outright (Section 6-1-104).
Even in dairy-and-poultry country, the incorporated City of Turlock keeps tight limits on livestock within city limits. Section 6-1-105.1 ('Other domesticated animals') permits larger livestock only on bigger lots: 'On parcels of land one-half (1/2) acre or larger, one (1) horse, or one (1) cow, or one (1) sheep, or one (1) goat.' The 'or' is significant - the code authorizes one animal of one of those types, not a herd, and only where the parcel is at least a half-acre. Smaller lots get no large-livestock allowance under this provision. Housing is regulated by setbacks in subsection (b): 'Stables or barns shall not be located within one hundred feet (100') of a residential dwelling located on an adjacent property,' and pens or quarters for animals must be at least 20 feet from the rear and 25 feet from the side property line. Hogs are treated separately and banned: Section 6-1-104 ('Keeping hogs prohibited') forbids keeping or maintaining any hog pen or pig sty in the city and bars keeping live hogs longer than 24 hours (only for shipment). The lone pig allowance is the single potbellied pig permitted as a pet under Sections 6-1-105.1 and 6-1-112, subject to size and permit limits. Livestock and fowl must also be contained - animals running at large can be impounded under Article 2 of the chapter. Anyone wanting livestock should confirm both the half-acre threshold and zoning for their specific property with the City.
Keeping large livestock on a parcel under half an acre, exceeding the one-animal allowance, or siting a stable/barn within 100 feet of a neighbor's dwelling violates Section 6-1-105.1 and is enforced by Turlock Animal Services. Keeping a hog or pig sty violates Section 6-1-104. Livestock found running at large or picketed in violation of Article 2 may be seized, impounded, and - after notice - sold if unredeemed (Sections 6-1-201 to 6-1-205).
