Microchipping is not mandatory countywide in Westchester, but is strongly encouraged by SPCA Westchester, WCDOH, and most adoption organizations as a permanent identification method for lost pets.
Westchester County Chapter 41 does not mandate microchipping, and New York lacks statewide microchip requirements for owned pets. However, virtually all shelters and rescues in the county chip pets prior to adoption. SPCA Westchester runs periodic low-cost chip clinics. Lost pets brought to county or municipal animal shelters are scanned for chips upon intake. ISO standard 15-digit chips are recommended. Owners must keep registration data current with chip registries such as HomeAgain, AKC Reunite, or 24PetWatch to enable rapid reunification when pets stray.
There are no fines for failing to microchip in Westchester. Owners of unchipped lost pets may face longer reclaim delays and higher shelter boarding fees.
