Chicago's Curfew Laws: The Rules That Matter
If you live in Chicago or are thinking about moving there, curfew laws are one of those things you probably won't think about until they affect you directly. Chicago has 2 specific rules on the books covering different aspects of curfew laws, and some of them might surprise you.
Juvenile Curfew
Chicago prohibits minors under 17 from public places between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM Sunday-Thursday and between 11:00 PM and 6:00 AM Friday-Saturday. Children under 12 must be off the streets after 8:30 PM/9:00 PM. Exceptions include parental accompaniment, work, and school events. Parents face fines and community service.
Key details: Age Cutoff: Age cutoff: under 17 (and stricter for under 12). Sun Thu: Sun-Thu nights: 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Fri/sat Nights: Fri/Sat nights: 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM. Landscaping: Under 12: off streets by 8:30/9:00 PM. Exceptions Parent: Exceptions: parent escort, work, school event.
A violation is punishable by a $500 fine and up to 10 hours of community service. Parents who knowingly permit a violation face the same penalty. CPD transports detained minors to a police facility for parent pickup.
Compared to other cities, Chicago takes a harder line on juvenile curfew. The enforcement and penalty structure reflects that.
Park Curfew
Chicago parks are generally open from 6 AM to 11 PM under the Chicago Park District Code. Public school playgrounds close at 9:30 PM under MCC 10-36-120. Police enforce park curfew hours.
Key details: Park Hours: 6 AM - 11 PM (general). School Playgrounds: 9:30 PM - 6 AM closed (MCC 10-36-120). Forest Preserves: Sunrise to sunset (Cook County). Enforcement: CPD + Park District employees. Fine: Up to $500 for park violations.
Park curfew violations carry fines up to $500 under the Park District Code. School playground trespass may result in arrest and criminal trespass charges under Illinois law.
This is not one of those rules that cities tend to ignore. Chicago actively enforces its park curfew requirements.
The Bottom Line
Chicago is tougher than many cities when it comes to curfew laws. Out of the 2 rules covered here, 2 are rated strict. If you are a homeowner, renter, or business owner in Chicago, take the time to understand these requirements before they become a problem. Most violations come with fines, and some repeat violations can escalate.
Keep in mind that Chicago can amend these rules at any council meeting. For the most current version of any rule mentioned here, check the specific ordinance page, where we track updates as they happen.
