Matthews enforces Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement housing standards requiring rental and owner-occupied properties to be free of rodent, roach, termite, and mosquito infestations. NC Structural Pest Control Act (NCGS 106-65.22) licenses pest control operators through the NC Department of Agriculture.
Matthews adopts the Minimum Housing Code administered jointly with Mecklenburg County Code Enforcement. Property owners must maintain premises free of vermin harborage, including sealing exterior penetrations, removing standing water that breeds mosquitoes (Aedes aegypti monitoring per Mecklenburg County Public Health), and preventing rodent entry through gaps larger than 1/4 inch. Termite treatments and wood-destroying insect reports must be performed by operators licensed under NC Structural Pest Control Committee per NCGS 106-65.22. Matthews Code Enforcement responds to complaints about infestations on neighboring properties and may order abatement under NCGS 160A-193.
Civil penalties up to 100 dollars per day for continuing housing code violations. Mecklenburg County may place liens on properties for unabated infestations. Unlicensed pest control work violates NCGS 106-65.27 carrying Class 2 misdemeanor charges.
