Bethlehem FAQ
When exactly can I put my Bethlehem trash bin at the curb?
After 6:00 PM on the day before your scheduled collection day. Codified Ordinance §1162.08(d) states that no earlier than 6:00 PM on the day preceding a collection day may containers be placed anywhere on the property. Bins must be returned to a place no more than five feet from the front, rear, or sides of a building no later than 8:00 PM on the collection day - so the curb window runs from 6:00 PM the previous evening to 8:00 PM on the pickup day.
Can I keep my trash bin in my front yard between pickups?
No - unless your building has no rear or side access. §1162.07(b)(1) prohibits any container from being stored in the front of any building on the premises unless the building is located in an area where there is no access to the rear or sides by way of easement or public right-of-way. In that no-rear-access situation, the container shall be stored on a porch, if possible, to remove it from the public right-of-way, and the owner is responsible for minimizing smell and preventing the existence of a public nuisance. All other properties must store bins out back.
Can recycling containers be different from trash containers in Bethlehem?
Yes. Under §933.04(a), the City provides each resident two recycling containers - one for commingled glass, cans, and plastic, and another (with lid) for paper products. Residents may also use any other open, rigid, waterproof container of not more than 30 gallons capacity, but a container other than one provided by the City must be clearly marked 'recycling.' Containers shall be placed on the curb no earlier than 6:00 PM the night before the designated collection day and must be removed from the curb no later than 8:00 PM the day of collection (§933.04(c)(5)).
