Does my existing pool need 2 safety features?

Only if built or substantially remodeled after January 1, 2007. Older pools are grandfathered but still require the 5-foot barrier. At sale, sellers must disclose which safety features are present.

Can I use my house wall as one side of the pool barrier?

Yes, but doors from the house leading to the pool area must have either self-closing hardware, alarms, or both, depending on which safety feature combination you select under the 2007 law.

Does my old pool need to be updated to current safety standards?

Pools built before January 1, 2007 are not automatically required to upgrade, but any substantial remodel or the sale of the property triggers compliance review and disclosure. New and remodeled pools must have the barrier plus two of seven drowning-prevention features.

Can my six-foot wood privacy fence double as the pool fence?

Yes, if it meets all pool-barrier requirements: 60-inch minimum height measured from the pool side, no climbable horizontal members on the pool side, gate self-closing/self-latching with high-mounted latch, and maximum 2-inch gap at grade.
