Longmont enforces smoke alarm placement under the adopted 2021 International Fire Code (LMC Chapter 16.32) and follows Colorado state law (C.R.S. 38-45-101 et seq.) for carbon monoxide alarms. Smoke alarms are required in every bedroom, outside each sleeping area, and on every level including the basement. A carbon monoxide alarm must be installed within 15 feet of the entrance to each room used for sleeping in any dwelling with a fuel-fired appliance, fireplace, or attached garage.

In every bedroom or sleeping area, in the hall outside each bedroom, and at least one on every level of the home including the basement. They must be on ceilings or high on walls, away from corners, ducts, fans, and not in garages, kitchens, or bathrooms.
Are carbon monoxide alarms required in Longmont rentals?
Yes. Under Colorado law C.R.S. 38-45-104, rental dwellings with a fuel-fired appliance, fireplace, or attached garage must have an operational carbon monoxide alarm within 15 feet of the entrance to every sleeping room at change of tenant occupancy on or after July 1, 2009.
How often should I replace smoke alarms in Longmont?
