Clearwater FAQ

Where do I have to install smoke alarms in a Clearwater home?

Florida Building Code Section R314 requires a smoke alarm inside every sleeping room, outside each separate sleeping area in the immediate vicinity of the bedrooms, and on every story of the dwelling including basements. New construction and substantial alterations must hardwire the alarms to the building electrical system with battery backup and interconnect them so that one alarm triggers all of them. Clearwater Fire and Rescue enforces these rules under Code of Ordinances Chapter 17.

Can I still use a 9-volt battery smoke alarm in Clearwater?

No, not for new installs or replacements. Florida Statute 553.883, effective January 1, 2015, requires every newly installed or replacement battery-powered smoke alarm to be powered by a nonremovable, nonreplaceable battery that lasts at least 10 years. Existing hardwired alarms with battery backup, or alarms wired into a centrally monitored alarm system, are not subject to the sealed-battery requirement.

Do I need a carbon monoxide alarm in my Clearwater house?

Florida Statute 553.885 requires every new building constructed on or after July 1, 2008 that contains a fossil-fuel-burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage to have an approved operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within 10 feet of each room used for sleeping. Lodging establishments with fossil-fuel-fired boilers in buildings that also contain sleeping rooms must add CO alarms under F.S. 509.211.
