Edison FAQ

Do I need a permit for an outdoor kitchen in Edison?

Yes if the kitchen includes any permanent gas line, hardwired electrical, or water/sewer connection - you'll need both a Chapter 37 zoning permit from the Edison Planning and Zoning Division and separate UCC building, electrical, plumbing, and fire-protection subcode permits from the Edison Construction Code Official. A purely portable propane grill on a movable patio cart with no fixed utilities generally does not require permits.

Can my landscaper install the gas line for my Edison outdoor kitchen?

Only if they are a licensed NJ Master Plumber. Under N.J.S.A. 45:14C, gas piping is part of the plumbing trade and must be installed by a Master Plumber under a permit issued by the Edison Plumbing Subcode Official. The sole exception is that the homeowner may perform the work in their own residence with the Construction Official's authorization.
