Unincorporated Clark County requires every residential swimming pool, spa, or artificial body of water to be enclosed by a non-climbable, four-sided barrier at least 60 inches high with self-closing, self-latching gates. Rules are codified at Clark County Code Chapter 22.20 (Swimming Pool and Spa Code), which adopts the International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (ISPSC) with Southern Nevada Amendments. The county adopted the 2024 ISPSC effective January 11, 2026.

Do I need a permit to install a pool fence in Las Vegas?

Yes. Pool, spa, and barrier work requires a permit through the City of Las Vegas Department of Building & Safety. Plans are reviewed under the 2018 ISPSC with Southern Nevada Amendments, and a barrier inspection is required before water can be placed in the pool.

Can I use removable mesh fencing for my Las Vegas pool?

Yes, if it complies with the Southern Nevada Amendments to the 2018 ISPSC. The mesh barrier must be at least 48 inches above grade on the side facing away from the pool, the bottom must be no more than 1 inch above the deck, and the gate must be self-closing and self-latching.

How tall does a backyard pool fence need to be in unincorporated Clark County?

At least 60 inches high above adjacent grade, measured from outside the enclosure. The barrier must be non-climbable and four-sided, with no more than 4 inches of clearance at the bottom. Public pools require at least 72 inches. These requirements come from CCC Chapter 22.20 adopting the ISPSC with Southern Nevada Amendments §305.2.1.

Do I need a self-closing, self-latching gate on my pool fence?

Yes. Under the Southern Nevada Amendments to ISPSC §305.3, every gate that is part of the pool barrier must be self-closing and self-latching, must open outward (away from the pool), and the latch release must sit 3 to 6 inches from the top of the gate. Openings within 18 inches of the release cannot exceed 1/2 inch. A pool kept without a compliant barrier may also be abated as a public nuisance under NRS 444.110.
