Monterey FAQ

Can I put a small sign in my yard for my Monterey County home business?

No. § 20.64.090(C)(5) provides that 'there shall be no advertising for the home occupation allowed on the property.' Even a small yard sign, A-frame, window decal or banner advertising the business is prohibited. The only sign allowed at a residence is a nameplate-and-address sign of up to 4 square feet aggregate, and that sign cannot advertise the business.

Does the nameplate exception let me display my business name?

No. The nameplate allowance in the residential sign chapter is intended for property identification (occupant name and address) only. Using it to display a business name, logo, phone number, or services would constitute prohibited advertising under § 20.64.090(C)(5).

What about a vehicle with my business logo parked at home?

A primary-use personal/business vehicle with normal lettering can be parked in your driveway, but parking a commercial vehicle on the property primarily for advertising display - especially with added banners, A-frame additions or signs - is treated as on-site advertising and violates § 20.64.090(C)(5). The County may cite the operator for both the sign violation and any vehicle parked beyond what is 'normal for the residence.'

Salinas FAQ
