Petaluma FAQ

How do I report a barking dog in unincorporated Sonoma County?

Contact Sonoma County Animal Services at 707-565-7100 or email theanimalshelter@sonomacounty.gov to request a barking-dog complaint form. Under Section 5-126 you must submit a sworn written complaint signed by at least two households in the neighborhood, or by one household if you live or work within 300 feet of the dog. Animal Services then investigates and, if a nuisance is confirmed, issues an abatement order to the owner. For nighttime barking that is also disturbing the peace, you can call the Sheriff at 707-565-2511 in parallel under Chapter 3, Article III of the County Code.

What if I am the only neighbor affected?

Section 5-126 has an explicit exception: only one written complaint is needed if there is only one person residing or regularly employed within 300 feet of the alleged nuisance source. This rule was designed for Sonoma County's large rural-residential and agricultural parcels where neighbors may be hundreds of feet apart. Document your address, the location of the dog, and a log of bark times and durations. Animal Services may also accept video or audio recordings as supporting evidence.

Do these rules apply inside Santa Rosa or Petaluma?

Mostly no. The cities of Santa Rosa, Petaluma, Sonoma, Healdsburg, Sebastopol, Cotati, Rohnert Park, Windsor, and Cloverdale have their own animal-control programs and municipal codes - for example Petaluma Municipal Code 9.08.180 governs dog barking inside Petaluma city limits. Some cities contract field services back to Sonoma County Animal Services, in which case officers may still apply Chapter 5 in those jurisdictions. Confirm with the city - or with County Animal Services - before filing a barking complaint.
