Where can my dog be off-leash in SF?

Only in city-designated dog play areas managed by Rec & Park, such as Alamo Square or Buena Vista Park. GGNRA federal sites have separate NPS rules with limited off-leash zones.

Who enforces leash rules?

San Francisco Animal Care and Control officers issue citations, supported by SFPD when needed. Federal park rangers enforce on GGNRA lands like Crissy Field.

How long can my dog's leash be in San Jose?

Six feet or less. San Jose Municipal Code Title 7 requires dogs in public places, city parks, and on city trails to be restrained on a leash not exceeding six feet, replacing the prior 20-foot maximum. Retractable leashes locked or used at a length greater than six feet do not comply, and trail users must also keep their dog to the right of the trail.

Does my dog need a San Jose license?

Yes. San Jose Municipal Code Section 7.20.520 requires every dog four months of age or older kept in the city to be licensed, and Section 7.20.540 sets the fees, with lower rates for spayed or neutered dogs. Current rabies vaccination is required before a license is issued. A late fee may apply if the license is not obtained within 30 days of the dog turning four months old or moving into the city.

Where can my dog go off-leash in San Jose?

Only in designated off-leash dog parks or areas authorized by Animal Care and Services or Parks and Recreation - including Hellyer, Butcher, Watson, Ryland, Saratoga Creek, and Miyuki. Everywhere else on public property, including general-use parks and trails, dogs must be on a leash of six feet or less. Off-leash violations can be cited and the dog impounded.
