California's Pool Safety Act (HSC 115922) requires at least two of seven features, such as an isolating fence, an approved safety cover, door exit alarms, a self-latching door device with the release at least 54 inches high, or a pool alarm. The two features cannot be on the same door.

Are anti-entrapment drain covers required?

Yes. New pools must have anti-entrapment suction outlet grates meeting the ANSI/APSP-16 performance standard designated by the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission, in addition to the two required drowning-prevention features.
