Eureka properties must comply with California PRC 4291's 100-foot defensible space requirement and Eureka Municipal Code Sec. 94.17, which prohibits weeds and rubbish that can ignite; Humboldt Bay Fire enforces locally and Cal Fire handles State Responsibility Areas.
Eureka Municipal Code Sec. 94.17 makes it unlawful for any property owner or occupant to allow weeds, vines, or combustible growth and rubbish to remain on real property. Combustible vegetation that can ignite and endanger property must be cut down and removed, and urban-wildland interface clearance follows California Fire Code Chapter 49. Eureka properties in or near State Responsibility Areas must also maintain 100 feet of defensible space under PRC Sec. 4291: cut annual grasses to 4 inches, remove ladder fuels, and trim branches at least 6 feet off the ground. Humboldt Bay Fire (533 C Street) handles local inspections.
Sec. 94.17 violations are abatable nuisances: Eureka may issue a notice to abate, perform clearance work, and assess costs as a lien on the property; PRC 4291 violations can carry state-level fines up to $500 per CAL FIRE.
