A residential fence must obtain zoning approval and meet the county's height and setback standards: six feet maximum in side and rear yards, 42 inches in the front yard and street side of corner lots, with taller fences set back one foot per foot of height.
Zoning Ordinance section 32-300.02.3 sets the core fence requirements: side and rear yard fences may not exceed six feet, and front-yard and corner-lot street-side fences may not exceed 42 inches, unless set back from the property line one foot for every foot of height. Zoning approval is mandatory for all new fences; pool-safety and pedestrian-protection fences also require a building permit. Fences must not obstruct required corner sight distance. The county recommends a boundary survey before installation.
Fences that exceed height limits, ignore the setback ratio, or lack zoning approval are subject to correction orders; pool-barrier fences without a building permit face building-code enforcement.
