Kootenai County requires that fences not block corner-lot visibility, meet setbacks if eight feet or taller, and avoid prohibited materials. Screening fences must be 100% sight-obscuring and at least six feet where required.
Under the LUDC, a fence under eight feet is exempt from setbacks (8.4.1106.C.1). Corner lots must keep a 50-foot sight triangle clear (8.4.1403). Where screening is required, refuse and outdoor storage must be enclosed by a 100% sight-obscuring fence at least six feet high (8.4.605.A-B), and total fencing is capped at eight feet (8.4.605.D). For confining animals, at minimum a six-foot fence or wall is required, and electronic fences alone do not satisfy it (4.6 standards). Fence material must not be tires, manufactured-home parts, salvaged building materials, automobile parts, junk, or garbage (8.4.605.C). Cities set separate standards inside their limits.
Noncompliant fences are LUDC violations (8.8.603.A misdemeanor); civil penalties up to $1,000 per day per violation, plus required correction.
