Recreational backyard fires are allowed in Prince George's County under Subtitle 11-268 if they stay small, burn only dry firewood, are attended by an adult, and sit at least 30 feet from any structure. No permit is needed for a small recreational fire.
Prince George's County treats backyard campfires and recreational fires as open burning under County Code Subtitle 11, Section 11-268, but small recreational fires are generally allowed without a permit and are exempt from Maryland's June-August open-burn ban. The fire must be attended at all times by a person 18 years or older who stays in direct view until it is completely extinguished, and a fire extinguisher or charged hose must be available. Only dry natural wood may be burned. Garbage, dead animals, animal waste, tires, plastic, rubber, and yard waste that create dense or noxious smoke are prohibited. Wood-burning fires must be at least 30 feet from any structure and are never allowed on a balcony or deck.
Unlawful or unattended backyard fires violate Section 11-268, carrying a maximum penalty of up to $1,000 and/or 6 months in jail, and the Fire Marshal can order the fire extinguished immediately.
