Denver, CO Invasive Plant Rules: Front Yard Gardens (2026)

Denver permits front yard food gardens in all residential zones. Colorado passed HB19-1050 in 2019, which prohibits local governments and HOAs from banning vegetable gardens on residential property, including front yards. Denver actively encourages water-wise landscaping and xeriscaping as alternatives to traditional turf grass. The city's water-wise landscaping programs provide resources for converting lawns to gardens and drought-tolerant plantings. Front yard gardens must comply with the city's weed ordinance (vegetation cannot exceed 6 inches in unmaintained areas) and must not encroach on public sidewalks or rights-of-way. Raised beds, trellises, and garden structures are permitted without building permits as long as they comply with setback requirements. Denver's urban agriculture program supports community gardens and residential food production. The city also allows composting and rainwater collection (up to two 55-gallon barrels under Colorado law SB09-080). Gardens must maintain clear sight lines at intersections.
