Prince William County has no ordinance banning or specifically regulating residential artificial turf. Synthetic lawns are generally allowed, but they cannot count toward the tree-canopy or landscaping requirements imposed on development sites, and drainage/impervious rules still apply.
There is no county code section that prohibits homeowners from installing artificial turf in place of a natural lawn. On development and site-plan projects, however, artificial turf does not satisfy the county's landscaping and tree-canopy cover requirements under DCSM Section 800, which are met by living trees and plants. Large turf installations should account for stormwater drainage, and any turf in a Resource Protection Area buffer would be constrained by the Chesapeake Bay clearing and grading limits. HOA covenants, not county code, are the more common restriction on synthetic lawns.
No county penalty for a residential synthetic lawn. Using turf to try to satisfy required site-plan landscaping is rejected at plan review; grading turf into an RPA buffer violates the Chesapeake Bay ordinance.
