North Chicago Zoning Ordinance Section 4.11 establishes landscaping and bufferyard requirements. Street trees must be planted at one canopy tree per 60 linear feet in R1 districts and one per 50 linear feet in all other districts (amended June 2023). Minimum canopy tree size is 2.5 inches caliper at DBH. Understory trees minimum 1.5 inches caliper. Buffer yard and street trees must be maintained in usable condition with no hazards, nuisances, or unhealthy conditions.
Failure to trim overhanging branches after a notice results in the county performing the work and billing the owner $200β$2,000 depending on scope. Emergency removals for hazardous trees may be performed without prior notice.
