Prince George's County exempts non-amplified sound from permitted sporting, entertainment, and public gatherings between 7 a.m. and midnight. Electronically amplified outdoor music is not exempt and must meet the full decibel limits.
County Code § 19-123(b)(10) exempts sound — except electronically amplified sound — created between 7 a.m. and midnight by sporting events (other than target shooting), entertainment events, and other public gatherings operating under permit or permission of the appropriate local jurisdiction. These include athletic contests, amusement parks, carnivals, fairs, parades, and public celebrations. Because the exemption expressly excludes electronically amplified sound, an outdoor concert or event using speakers or a PA remains subject to the maximum allowable levels in § 19-122 (65 dBA day / 55 dBA night in residential areas) and the noise-disturbance prohibition. The county's former discretionary waiver process for temporary events was repealed by CB-073-2024. Individual cities may issue their own special-event or amplified-sound permits.
Amplified outdoor music exceeding the limits, or unpermitted events creating a disturbance, can draw a civil citation or misdemeanor fine up to $1,000 for a first offense and $1,500 thereafter.
