Jersey City (Ch. 332, Art. X-XI) allows tagging and towing of vehicles left over 72 hours, unregistered, or inoperable. Hoboken uses a similar 72-hour standard. Union City enforces through its police parking unit. Vehicles towed as abandoned are processed under N.J.S.A. 39:10A-1 et seq.
Jersey City Code Chapter 332 (Vehicles and Traffic), Article X (Impounding) and Article XI (Abandoned Motor Vehicles), authorizes the Parking Enforcement Division to tag vehicles parked on public streets for more than 72 consecutive hours and vehicles that appear abandoned (flat tires, expired registration, missing license plates, visible damage). After a 72-hour tagging period with attempted owner notification, the vehicle is towed to a city-contracted impound yard. Hoboken's Parking Utility and Union City's police apply similar 72-hour rules. On private property, inoperable or unregistered vehicles must be inside a garage or fully screened behind an opaque fence; visible junk vehicles are a property-maintenance violation. Recovery follows N.J.S.A. 39:10A-1 et seq. β owners must pay accumulated towing and storage before release; if unclaimed after statutory notice, vehicles are sold at public auction.
72-hour tag-and-tow: standard procedure. Recovery fees: roughly $175 tow hookup + $35-$45/day storage in Hudson County impound lots. Junk vehicle on private property visible from the street: notice of violation, $100-$1,000 fine, abatement by city with lien for costs. Failure to remove after notice: continuing daily fines.
