Mississippi state law (MS Code Β§63-23-1 through Β§63-23-13) defines abandoned motor vehicles and establishes removal procedures for public property. Jackson's code prohibits storing inoperable, unregistered, or dismantled vehicles on private property visible from the street (Code of Ordinances Ch. 86 nuisance provisions). Vehicles must be in an enclosed garage or screened behind an opaque fence. On public streets, vehicles left more than 48-72 hours may be tagged and towed after notice to the registered owner. Flat tires, expired tags, or significant damage can classify a vehicle as inoperable/abandoned. Hinds County Sheriff's Office enforces in unincorporated areas. Vehicles actively being repaired may be exempt with documentation. After impoundment, owners have statutory notice periods before vehicles are sold at auction to satisfy liens.
