Mariposa County enforces maximum legal vehicle dimensions: 14 ft height, 102 in width, 40 ft single-unit / 65 ft combination length, and 20,000 lb per axle. Anything larger needs an oversize-load permit (County Resolution 71-59, CVC 35706). The county may further reduce weight limits on unimproved roads and bridges.
Oversized vehicles in unincorporated Mariposa County are governed by the County of Mariposa's maximum legal vehicle and load standards, which mirror the California Vehicle Code. Under the county's Maximum Legal Vehicles and Loads rules: no vehicle or load may exceed a height of 14 feet measured from the surface on which the vehicle stands; total outside width may not exceed 102 inches (8 feet 6 inches); a single unit may not exceed 40 feet in length and a vehicle combination may not exceed a total length of 65 feet; and the gross weight on any one axle may not exceed 20,000 pounds, with no more than 10,500 pounds on any one wheel or wheels supporting one end of an axle. The county may reduce the permissible weight of vehicles and loads on unimproved county roads or on county bridges, citing California Vehicle Code 35706. Movement of an extra-legal (oversize or overweight) vehicle or load requires a transportation permit, established by County of Mariposa Resolution No. 71-59. On-street parking of large vehicles is otherwise handled under the general MCC 10.08 parking rules and any posted no-parking zones. For permits and posted weight limits, contact Mariposa County Public Works.
Operating a vehicle or load that exceeds the legal height, width, length, or axle-weight limits without an extra-legal permit violates the county's weight-and-load standards and the California Vehicle Code. Exceeding a reduced weight limit posted on an unimproved road or county bridge is also enforceable.
