Oversized vehicles — motorhomes, large trailers and 'major recreational equipment' — can't be parked or stored on any public or private road in the unincorporated county for more than 24 hours. On private lots they're allowed subject to setback and outdoor-storage standards. Cities set their own size limits.
Kootenai County's Land Use Code (Article 4.7) defines major recreational equipment to include motor homes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, camping trailers and truck campers, plus utility trailers, and bars parking or storing them on any public or private road for longer than 24 hours. There is no single countywide length or weight cap for keeping such a vehicle on your own property; instead the outdoor-storage, setback and screening standards of the zoning district apply. Very large commercial rigs generally belong in commercial or industrial zones. Inside incorporated cities, municipal codes may impose specific size, screening or front-yard parking limits on oversized vehicles.
Storing oversized vehicles on a road beyond 24 hours, or in violation of outdoor-storage/setback standards, is a zoning violation abated by Code Enforcement (208-446-1070).
