Decks must comply with zoning setback requirements for the property's zoning district. Starting January 2026, all new permits must comply with 2025 California Building Codes.
Unpermitted elevated decks are building code violations and may be subject to retroactive permitting, modifications, or removal. Decks without required guardrails pose safety hazards and can result in stop-work orders. Setback violations are zoning enforcement matters.
