Fort Worth exempts fences 6 feet and under from building permits. Fences over 6 feet require a permit from Development Services. All fences must comply with the Zoning Ordinance for height, setback, and visibility triangle requirements.
Fort Worth's Development Services Department requires a building permit for fences exceeding 6 feet in height. Fences at or below 6 feet generally do not require a permit but must still comply with the Zoning Ordinance. Residential front yard fences are limited to 4 feet and must be at least 50% open. Side and rear yard fences can be up to 8 feet. Corner lots must maintain a sight visibility triangle (typically 25 feet from the intersection of the curb lines). The finished side of the fence must face the adjacent property or public right-of-way. Masonry or concrete fences may require additional structural engineering review. Pool enclosure fences must meet International Residential Code requirements (minimum 48 inches, self-closing gate). Permit applications can be submitted at the Development Services Center or online.
Building without a required permit: fine up to $500. Non-compliant fences may receive a notice to modify or remove.
