Fort Worth allows privacy fences up to 8 feet in residential rear and side yards. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet. Solid privacy fences over 6 feet require a building permit. Fences must not obstruct sight visibility triangles at intersections.
Fort Worth Zoning Ordinance Section 5.301 and the Building Code regulate fence heights and construction. Residential privacy fences in rear yards and interior side yards may be up to 8 feet tall. Front yard fences are limited to 4 feet and must be at least 50% open (picket-style). Corner lots have additional restrictions to maintain sight visibility triangles. Solid privacy fences exceeding 6 feet in height require a building permit from Development Services. All fences must be set back from the property line per the Zoning Ordinance β the finished side must face outward. Materials must be durable (wood, vinyl, metal, masonry). Barbed wire and razor wire are prohibited in residential zones. Chain-link fences are permitted but may not have barbed wire attachments in residential areas.
Building without required permit: fine up to $500. Fences exceeding height limits or in visibility triangles subject to removal order.
