In unincorporated Lake County, grass, undergrowth and other plant life on improved property may not exceed 10 inches in height from soil level. Taller uncultivated vegetation is a code violation and public nuisance.
Sec. 14-56(b) of the Nuisance Abatement Ordinance makes it unlawful for an owner of improved property to allow uncultivated vegetation, grass, undergrowth or other dead or living plant life to exceed 10 inches in height from the soil level. 'Uncultivated vegetation' means growth allowed in an uncontrolled manner or not regularly maintained. This is a genuine Lake County (unincorporated) rule; cities such as Clermont, Eustis and Mount Dora set their ownβoften lowerβmowing thresholds. Agricultural and certain natural upland areas are treated differently under the ordinance's exemptions.
Overgrowth violations go before the Code Enforcement Special Master; uncorrected, the county mows the lot and records a cost lien accruing 12% annual interest. Special Master fines up to $1,000/day (first) or $5,000/day (repeat).
