Providence residents cannot place loose syringes in household trash or recycling; RIDOH directs disposal through pharmacy take-back, mail-back containers, or hospital sharps programs to protect sanitation workers.
RI Department of Health guidance and the RI Resource Recovery Corporation prohibit placing loose syringes, lancets, or pen needles into curbside trash or recycling because they injure waste workers. Providence residents must use FDA-cleared sharps containers and dispose through participating pharmacies (CVS, Walgreens, Stop & Shop pharmacies often accept), the RIDOH Mail-Back program, or designated hospital drop-offs. Drug-user health programs operated by AIDS Care Ocean State and ENCORE distribute and collect sharps as part of harm-reduction services. Improperly disposed sharps can also trigger code-enforcement complaints if discarded on private property.
Improper disposal in trash or recycling is prohibited; littering sharps in public can lead to citation and cleanup cost recovery.
