Lake County's content-neutral sign code treats a garage-sale sign like any temporary sign. On your own property you may display a light-material sign of 3–16 sq ft without a permit — under 6 feet tall, not illuminated, set back from the road. Right-of-way signs are banned.
Because the LDR regulates signs by size, material and placement rather than message, garage-sale signs fall under the exempt-sign provision, Sec. 11.01.06(H). A single light-material sign (paper, cloth, plywood) greater than 3 and up to 16 sq ft may be displayed on a parcel up to one acre without a permit, capped at 6 feet high, non-illuminated, 20+ feet from the pavement and 10 feet from side lines. Signs placed in the county road right-of-way are prohibited and may be removed without notice; a utilization permit is required to place any sign there. 'Snipe signs' tacked to poles and trees are prohibited. Remove sale signs promptly. Inside cities, city rules apply.
Right-of-way or snipe signs may be removed by the county without notice; ongoing violations are enforced under Chapter 8, with general penalties up to $500 or 60 days jail (Sec. 1-6).
