Anne Arundel County permits temporary yard-sale signs on private property with owner consent. Placement on utility poles, street trees, and the state/county right-of-way is prohibited and signs are removed without notice by DPW and SHA.
Under Anne Arundel County Code Article 18, temporary noncommercial signs advertising residential yard and garage sales are allowed on private property without a permit provided they do not exceed 6 square feet in a residential district, are not illuminated, and do not block sight distances at intersections or driveways. Signs may be installed no more than 48 hours before the sale and must be removed within 24 hours after it ends. Placement in the public right-of-way — including shoulders, medians, and grass panels of state highways (MD-2 Ritchie Highway, MD-100, MD-450, US-50/301, MD-175 through Odenton and Fort Meade) — is prohibited by MD Transportation §21-1116; the State Highway Administration and county DPW remove signs on sight. Nailing or stapling signs to utility poles and trees is prohibited under county code and BGE tariff rules. Some waterfront Critical Area communities (Shady Side, Deale, Edgewater) have community-association restrictions that are enforced privately.
Signs in the right-of-way: removal without notice; repeat commercial sign companies subject to citations up to $250 per sign. Signs on utility poles or traffic signs: $50–$100 per sign. Failure to remove within 24 hours of sale end: municipal citation up to $100.
