Garage-sale signs in Chattanooga are permit-exempt yard signs. They may be up to 32 square feet, displayed no more than 15 days before and 30 days after the sale, and cannot be attached to trees, poles, or placed in the right-of-way.
Chattanooga's sign code (Sec. 3-146(3)) groups garage-sale signs with other yard signs, which are exempt from a permit. All yard signs "including but not limited to garage sales, construction or real estate purposes" are "limited to fifteen (15) days before and no more than thirty (30) days following the event" and must have a sign area of 32 square feet or less. Placement rules apply: a sign under 36 inches tall must be at least five feet from the pavement edge (ten feet if taller) and may never be pasted, nailed, or pinned to a curb, sidewalk, tree, lamppost, utility pole, fence, or rock. Signs blocking driveways or vision-clearance areas are prohibited.
Garage-sale signs left up beyond the 30-day window, oversized, or affixed to poles, trees, or the right-of-way may be removed or relocated by the city, which can order them taken down.
