On your own property, a garage-sale sign is treated as a yard sign under Rio Rancho Sign Code Section 156.07(M): no permit, up to 8 square feet each and 32 square feet total. Off-premises directional signs require a right-of-way display permit (Section 156.07(H)); unpermitted bandit signs are prohibited under Section 156.06(G).
Rio Rancho's content-neutral Sign Regulations (Chapter 156) do not have a garage-sale-specific section, so the rules depend on where the sign goes. A sign on the lot holding the sale qualifies as a yard sign under Section 156.07(M), which is permitted in all residential districts without a permit. Yard signs are limited to 8 square feet and 6 feet in height each, with a combined total of no more than 32 square feet per lot, must be set back at least 5 feet from any right-of-way line, and may not be illuminated. The familiar directional signs that point drivers to a sale are off-premises signs. Placing temporary signs in the public right-of-way requires a right-of-way display permit under Section 156.07(H), which authorizes weekend (Friday noon to Monday noon) or 60-day display periods, limits signs to 8 square feet and 3 feet in height, and bans placement in medians, roundabouts, the clear sight triangle at intersections, and on utility poles or fences. Without that permit, temporary off-premises signs - known as push, bandit, or snipe signs - are prohibited under Section 156.06(G) and may be removed by the City at the responsible party's expense. The Development Services Department enforces these rules.
Posting unpermitted garage-sale directional signs in the right-of-way, attaching signs to utility poles, placing them in medians or near intersections, or exceeding yard-sign size limits can lead to City removal of the signs at the owner's expense and enforcement through Development Services.
