Topeka lets you post a garage-sale sign on your own property as a temporary sign, up to six square feet in residential zones. Off-premise directional signs staked in the right-of-way or nailed to utility poles are prohibited and get removed.
Under Topeka's sign code (Topeka Municipal Code Title 18.10), a garage- or yard-sale sign is a temporary sign allowed on the private property where the sale happens, capped at six square feet in residential districts and posted with the owner's consent. The catch is the directional signs people stake at intersections: temporary signs are not allowed in the public right-of-way between sidewalk and street, on utility poles, or on traffic signs, and the city removes and impounds them at up to $50 each. Signs must come down when the sale ends. Unincorporated Shawnee County follows its own zoning sign rules.
Garage-sale signs in the right-of-way or on utility poles are removed and impounded, up to $50 per sign. Signs left up after the sale are treated as abandoned and removed.
