Alabama Open Carry Rules and Local Preemption

Open carry of handguns and long guns is generally lawful in Alabama for persons not prohibited from firearm possession. Code Section 13A-11-61.3 preempts municipal and county ordinances that would restrict open carry beyond state law. Open carry remains prohibited at certain sensitive locations, including courthouses, jails, and properly posted private property. Brandishing or carrying with intent to alarm may still constitute disorderly conduct under separate statutes. Vehicle carry rules and parade or demonstration restrictions also apply.

Local ordinances restricting lawful open carry are void; misuse may trigger disorderly conduct charges.
