Alabama Vehicle Carry Rules for Handguns Statewide

Code of Alabama Section 13A-11-73, as amended by the 2022 permitless carry law effective January 1, 2023, allows persons at least 19 years old who are not prohibited possessors to carry a handgun concealed in a vehicle without a state pistol permit. Loaded handguns may be transported in the passenger compartment, glove box, or console. Long guns generally may also be transported. Code Section 13A-11-61.3 preempts local ordinances that would impose stricter vehicle carry rules. Carry remains prohibited at courthouses, jails, police facilities, and properly posted private property.

Unlawful vehicle carry by prohibited persons or in restricted locations risks misdemeanor or felony charges and firearm seizure.
