Alaska Open Carry Permitted Statewide Without Local Restriction

Alaska imposes no general license requirement for open carry. Adults who may lawfully possess firearms may openly carry handguns and long guns in most public spaces. Local governments are preempted under AS 29.35.145 from enacting open-carry bans, registration, or licensing schemes. State law continues to prohibit firearms in courts, schools, and licensed alcohol premises, and private property owners may post their property off-limits. Discharge of firearms inside municipal limits may still be regulated locally without conflicting with preemption.

Carrying in a posted prohibited area or by a person banned from possession is a misdemeanor or felony depending on circumstances.
