Louisiana Uniform Construction Code Shed Thresholds

The Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code (LSUCC), La. R.S. 40:1730.21 through 40:1730.70, requires every parish and municipality to enforce the adopted International Residential Code without weakening the standards. Section R105.2 of the IRC, as adopted by the Louisiana State Uniform Construction Code Council, exempts one-story detached accessory structures used as tool and storage sheds when the floor area does not exceed 200 square feet. Local jurisdictions may not raise this threshold below state standards but may still require zoning permits, setbacks, and floodplain compliance separately from the building permit exemption.

Erecting a regulated shed without required building permits or floodplain approval can result in stop-work orders, code citations, and removal orders issued by the local code official.
