Louisiana State Sanitary Code Pool Barrier Requirements

Under Louisiana Revised Statutes 40:1730.21 et seq., the State Uniform Construction Code Council adopts the International Residential Code (IRC) and International Building Code (IBC), which require swimming pool barriers meeting specific safety standards. Residential pool barriers must generally be at least 48 inches high, have no openings allowing a 4-inch sphere to pass, prevent climbing footholds, and include self-closing and self-latching gates opening outward from the pool. The Louisiana State Sanitary Code (LAC Title 51) adds public health protections for public pools. Local parishes and municipalities can impose stricter requirements but cannot waive these statewide minimums established by the uniform construction code.

Code violations may result in stop-work orders, denial of certificate of occupancy, and civil fines under La. R.S. 40:1730.28. Pool installations without barriers can also create premises liability exposure.
