Louisiana Firearms Vehicle Carry Standard

Under La. R.S. 14:95, illegal carrying of weapons does not apply to firearms transported in a private vehicle by an owner or possessor for legitimate purposes. Act 1 of the 2024 Second Extraordinary Session expanded permitless concealed carry under R.S. 40:1379.3 for adults 18 and older not otherwise prohibited from possessing firearms. Loaded handguns may be kept in glove boxes, consoles, or on the person while in a vehicle. State preemption under R.S. 40:1796 bars parishes and municipalities from enacting stricter vehicle-carry rules. Restrictions remain on school grounds, parking lots posted under R.S. 14:95.2, and federal facilities.

Illegal carrying of weapons under R.S. 14:95 is a misdemeanor punishable by up to six months imprisonment and a $500 fine for first offenses, with escalating felony penalties for repeat or aggravated violations.
