Maine state law: amplified music and sound systems

Per 17-A MRS Section 501-A(1)(A)(1), it is a Class E crime to, in a public place, intentionally or recklessly cause annoyance to others by 'making loud and unreasonable noise, including noise from a personal audio system or from operating a sound-reproducing system.' The 2021 amendment expanded the statute by reference to consumer fireworks (Title 8 Section 221-A). Maine does not set an outdoor-event decibel cap, an amplified-sound permit threshold, or a statewide curfew on amplified music. Special-event amplified-sound permits, outdoor concert decibel limits, parade and festival sound-permit thresholds, and patio/restaurant amplification rules are set by individual city or town ordinance under 30-A MRS Section 3001 home-rule authority. Portland operates an outdoor-entertainment amplified-sound permit through the City Clerk's Office; Bar Harbor and other coastal municipalities operate similar event-permit regimes.

Class E crime: up to 6 months jail / $1,000 fine. Municipal amplified-sound permit violations typically carry civil fines of $100-$1,000 per occurrence and permit revocation.
