Maine state law: no STR insurance mandate; standard property/liability law applies

The Maine Revised Statutes contain no statute requiring a minimum liability insurance policy specific to short-term rentals. Maine homeowner's insurance generally does not cover commercial rental activity, and standard policies often exclude STR claims - but the duty to carry STR-appropriate coverage is contractual (insurer-imposed) and not state-mandated. Municipal STR ordinances may require proof of liability insurance as a condition of registration under 30-A MRS § 3001 home-rule authority: Portland's STR ordinance requires registrants to maintain a minimum amount of commercial general liability insurance and to provide a certificate of insurance at registration; Bar Harbor similarly requires insurance documentation. Marketplace platforms (Airbnb's $1 million AirCover for Hosts, Vrbo's $1 million Liability Insurance) provide secondary coverage layered on top of any underlying policy. No Maine statute prescribes a coverage floor, deductible cap, or specific covered risks for STR operators. Workers' compensation insurance under 39-A MRS may be required if the STR has employees.
