Maine state law: STR noise enforced under disorderly conduct (17-A § 501-A)

The Maine Revised Statutes do not establish an STR-specific noise standard. Two layered authorities govern STR noise: (1) 17-A MRS § 501-A (Disorderly conduct) makes it a Class E crime if 'in a public place, the person intentionally or recklessly causes annoyance to others by intentionally... Making loud and unreasonable noise, including noise from a personal audio system or from operating a sound-reproducing system' OR 'in a private place, the person makes loud and unreasonable noise that can be heard by another person as unreasonable noise in a public place or in another private place, after having been ordered by a law enforcement officer to cease the noise.' The 2021 amendment added consumer-fireworks noise to the rule. (2) Municipal quiet-hours, decibel limits, and STR-specific 'no party' ordinances are adopted under 30-A MRS § 3001 home-rule authority. Maine has no statewide nighttime decibel limit or quiet-hours window. Portland's STR code requires hosts to be reachable 24/7 for noise complaints and authorizes permit suspension after repeated verified violations.
