Maryland Propane Storage and LP Gas Regulations

The Maryland State Fire Marshal enforces COMAR 29.06.02, which adopts the National Fire Protection Association Standard 58 (NFPA 58) for the storage and handling of liquefied petroleum gases. Residential propane containers under 125 gallons water capacity may be installed with minimum 5-foot setbacks from buildings and property lines. Larger tanks require 10 to 50 foot setbacks based on capacity. Indoor storage of cylinders larger than 1 pound is generally prohibited in occupied buildings. Installation, transport, and dispensing of propane requires licensed dealers. Local jurisdictions cannot relax these statewide fire safety standards but may impose additional zoning restrictions.

Violations are misdemeanors enforced by the State Fire Marshal with fines up to $1,000 per violation, plus potential closure orders for unsafe installations.
