Mississippi Statewide Pool Barrier Building Code Standards

Under Mississippi Code Section 17-2-1, the Mississippi Building Code Council adopted the International Residential Code, which includes Appendix G governing residential swimming pool safety barriers. Pools deeper than 24 inches must be enclosed by a barrier at least 48 inches high, measured from the outside. Openings beneath barriers cannot exceed 4 inches, and gates must be self-closing and self-latching, opening outward away from the pool. Latch release mechanisms must be at least 54 inches above the ground. These technical standards apply uniformly statewide for permitted pool construction, though local enforcement and inspection vary by jurisdiction.

Code violations may halt construction, void permits, or require corrective work before final inspection approval. Civil liability exposure follows non-compliant installations, especially after drownings.
