Under MCA 75-10-212 and related provisions, Montana prohibits unauthorized disposal of solid waste, including bulk items such as appliances, furniture, mattresses, and construction debris. All bulk disposal must occur at a Montana DEQ-licensed Class II or Class III landfill or transfer station. The DEQ Solid Waste Program licenses facilities, sets operational standards, and enforces against illegal dumping. White goods containing refrigerants must be processed by certified technicians for refrigerant recovery before disposal. Tires have separate handling requirements. State law establishes the statewide framework; local governments handle collection logistics but must use licensed facilities.

Illegal dumping is a misdemeanor under MCA 75-10-212 with fines up to $500 for first offense, escalating penalties, cleanup costs, and potential felony charges for hazardous waste.
